Abstract

Objective: Considering to the Bahmanshir River is one of the most important exploitable rivers in the country, and currently various projects, including the construction of upstream and downstream Bahmanshir dams and navigation locks, the Torah Bakhakh pumping station, are being studied and implemented on this river, the aim of the present study was to estimate the rate of suspended sediment load that could affect the aforementioned projects.

Method: There are various methods for estimating the rate of suspended sediments and they have always been used by water science engineers. Today, with the advancement of technology and new technologies, new methods have been developed. In the present study, MODIS satellite data was used in remote sensing to study the estimation of suspended sediment load.

Results: The results of the research show that the most optimal parameter for estimating suspended sediment concentration is the red and infrared bands. Also, the significance level in both tests at the Torah Bakhakh station (annual data) and stations 3 and 5 (daily, one-year data) is greater than 0.05, and at the Torah Bakhakh station (daily, ten-year data) and stations 1, 2, and 4 (daily, one-year data) is less than 0.05.

Conclusions: The results indicate that MODIS satellite data can be effectively used to estimate suspended sediment concentration in the Bahmanshir River. The red and infrared bands were identified as the most suitable parameters for sediment estimation. Statistical results showed significant relationships at some stations and time scales, while others were not statistically significant. Overall, remote sensing provides a useful tool for monitoring suspended sediment and supporting the planning and management of hydraulic projects along the Bahmanshir River.
